Abstract: The aggregates of a defined number of atoms, clusters, have exceptional chemical and physical properties that strongly depend on the exact number of atoms.
Clusters are potentially usable as catalytic particles, as constituents of new electronic and photonic materials, and sensors, as binding sites for proteins on biochips, among other things.
Traditional cluster sources, if able to select by size, do not produce more than a few nanograms/hour.
In this project we intend to apply a new technology that has been demonstrated in principle for the macroscopic production of selected clusters.
The two fields to which we intend to apply the first products of this technology are heterogeneous catalysis and photonic materials.
This will allow to start a new research line at INO Florence, within the already active research branch of spectroscopy and molecule manipulation.
