Precision laser spectroscopy of helium

Abstract: This paper describes recent progress in the helium spectroscopy at 398 nm starting form the metastable level 23S1. The first measurements have been obtained in a discharge absorption cell where the metastable helium is produced. In this work, results obtained with the discharge cell is compared with the measurements obtained by means of a metastable atomic beam where the atoms are less perturbed by systematics effects (collisions, as Stark fields, etc.). Also, an improvement in the two-photon spectrometer is considered, increasing the power and the spectral purity of the sources.
