Abstract: We study the interactions between orthogonally polarized solitons in optical fiber transmissions. We show that the dynamics of the interaction of two orthogonal pulses may be well represented by a variational approach that involves four polarization components. We relate the observed polarization interaction phenomena with the exact two soliton stationary wave solutions of the vector nonlinear Schrodinger equation.
