Abstract: Raman spectroscopy is an important tool in the field of Heritage Science allowing the identification of pigments, colourants, binders, and other substances in polychrome surfaces, ceramics, paper, parchment, textile and stone. The recent developments in the Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) enable characterization of a great number of natural and sythethic compounds in works of art with hude selectivity and molecular specificity. The objective of the project is to train young researchers in the use of these and other complementary techniques from their consolidated forms to recent and innovative technologies, applied also in situ. The training will be carried out in the laboratories of National Research Council, Opificio delle Pietre Dure and Chemistry Department of University of Florence.

The Scientific Results:
1) Mineralogical interpretation of multispectral images: The case study of the pigments in the frigidarium of the Sarno Baths, Pompeii
2) Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS): extractionless non-hydrolysis method for the detection of red lake pigments in paintings
3) Multi-analytical approach to the study of mecca gilding technique
4) Revealing Hidden Features in Multilayered Artworks by Means of an Epi-Illumination Photoacoustic Imaging System
5) SERS IDENTIFICATION OF NATURAL YELLOW DYES IN PROTEINACEOUS FIBRES USING AG-AGAR NANOCOMPOSITE
