Abstract: Reference is made to an earlier paper (Mandel and Agrawal, 1982) in which it has been shown that the symmetric solution for a resonantly tuned bidirectional ring laser is always unstable above the threshold, whereas the asymmetric solution has a finite domain of stability. These results are analyzed more closely in the present study, and it is shown that the stable steady states are only weakly stable since the relaxation rates are high. Thus, a transition from one direction of propagation to the other can be easily induced by any kind of perturbation. An analysis is also made of the validity of the commonly used approximation involving a truncated harmonic expansion and the adiabatic elimination of the polarization.
