Use of CCD cameras and red-extended photographic film for inspection and recording of dark papyri

Abstract: Dark papyri are often difficult to decipher because of the lack of contrast between writing and background. Good results are obtained in the far-red near-infrared spectral band.The use of modern CCD Tv cameras and films for aerial photography in this band is described as a flexible tool for inspection and fine grain photographic recording, respectively. A dark papyrus has been examined. Images taken in this pectral band are shown to demonstrate the improvement in legiblility.
