Analogies and discrepancies between different reduction schemes for class-B laser equations

Abstract: Two different reduction schemes for class B laser equations, one based on the center manifold theory (CMT) and the other on the linear filters theory (LFT), were analyzed. Both schemes were tested on a model representing the dynamics of the carbon dioxide laser. While the CMT reduction scheme is able to provide excellent reproduction of the carbon dioxide laser models and experiments, it contains several strong nonlinearities which make the physical interpretation more problematic. On the other hand, the LFT reduction scheme provides a model which satisfactorily reproduces the complete one. The drawback of being three dimensional is compensated by the fact that no extra nonlinearities are introduced.
