Doppler-free excitation of the weak 6S(1/2)-8P(1/2) cesium transition at 389 nm

Abstract: We report the resolution of the hyperfine structure of the 6S(1/2)-8P(1/2) Cs transition by means of laser saturation spectroscopy. This transition is anomalously weak as discussed by zu Putlitz in 1969. The metrological potentialities of this narrow line are illustrated together with a possible scheme for a direct frequency measurement.
