Excimer lasers as a new tool for dentistry in root canal therapy.

Abstract: Preliminary measurements of UV ablation thresholds of dental tissues were performed. A table shows the etching depth of healthy and infiltrated dentin and enamel as a function of laser fluence. The highly differentiated ablation thresholds of these tissues can result not only in a selective etching but in a mechanical guidance of the fiber along the canal. The measured values have been obtained for delivery of the laser light to the samples through a PCS 600-µm core optical fiber. An experimental investigation on tissue diagnostics has also been carried out. Autofluorescence spectra of healthy and necrotic dentin, enamel, and pulp were obtained by low-power excimer laser irradiation of teeth samples through an optical fiber, showing different spectral responses of the tissues under test.
