Abstract: The authors extend a nonlinear coupled-mode analysis to obtain an exact solution to the power-dependent switching in a mismatched nonlinear coupler, possibly with nonuniform transverse material nonlinearity. Use of the solution over successive coupler sections with an alternating sign of the phase mismatch discloses the existence of two critical powers for the onset of a stochastic instability phenomenon. At low powers, the device is reciprocal. For uniform nonlinearity, it has been found that in the nonlinear regime and below a certain threshold power the device becomes highly nonreciprocal. This effect is ascribed to instability in the spatial evolution of the field due to a bifurcation of the eigenmodes of the structure.
