Self-stimulated Raman scattering suppression and supercontinuum generation in birefringent fibers

Abstract: The observation of a substantial increase in the stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) threshold when using 850-fs pulses at 598 nm from a synchronously pumped dye laser, coupled into either the fast or slow axis of a birefringent fiber with dn = 3.28 × 10-5, is reported. The threshold increase has been evaluated through comparison with SRS observed in the same fiber with mode-locked 80-ps pulses from a frequency doubled Nd:YAG source. In these conditions a threshold value of 200 W was measured. The temporal characteristics of the emitted radiation were investigated by tuning the phase matching angle of the autocorrelation crystal and revealed pulse breaking on the Stokes side, carrier broadening, and an unchanged pulse shape on the anti-Stokes side.
