Abstract: We investigate the interaction of two counter propagating linearly polarized waves in a dielectric waveguide grating in the presence of an intensity dependent contribution to the refractive index (optical Kerr effect). The resulting nonlinear distributed-feedback (DFB) mechanism responsible, from a classical point of view, for a marked limiting effect which stabilizes the intensity of one of the two waves, is shown to generate, once the problem is treated in a quantum mechanical way, a field exhibiting sub-Poissonian photon statistics.
