Abstract: High efficiency UV frequency conversion by stimulated Raman scattering in a XeCl (X = 308-nm) excimer laser-pumped multimode fiber is presented. The system consists of a first piece of fiber as a Stokes generator and a second as a power amplifier. Power conversion efficiencies up to 80% have been measured. Uses of fiber Raman amplifiers in the near UV are also discussed. When this work was done C. Lin was with AT&T Bell Laboratories, Holmdel, New Jersey 07733; he is now with General Optronics, Edison, New Jersey 08820. A. F. M. Y. Haider is with University of Dhaka, Physics Department, Dhaka-2, Bangladesh.
