Abstract: A novel hybrid waveguide structure that can be used to develop all-optical guided-wave devices involving highly absorbing nonlinear media is proposed. It consists of a linear ion-exchanged planar waveguide and a narrow groove filled with nonlinear material. Its functionality has been successfully demonstrated with two-wave-mixing tests and nanosecond pulses in the case of Au-doped sol-gel glass at 532 nm.
