Extra-bright paper, paints and computer screens could soon be on the way, thanks to a new discovery inspired by beetles.
Researchers at Cambridge University’s Cavendish Laboratory have found that the scales on the obscure Cyphochilus beetle are able to scatter light better than anything else in nature.
The phenomenon has been likened to a painter who needs to whiten a wall with a very small quantity of paint.
This efficiency is particularly important for insects that fly, as it makes them lighter and more manoeuvrable.
