We found that by opportune functionalization of a polar dielectric substrate, self-arrangement of hemicylindrical or toroidal-shaped liquid droplets can obtained. The process takes place when a thermal stimuli is provided to the substrate and a liquid layer is deposited on its surface. The self arrangement is due to the pyroelectric effect. We investigated this open microfluidic system for exploiting liquid cylindrical microlens with a variable focal length.
