Abstract: Light-induced drift (LID) has been studied as function of the laser bandwidth. To this purpose both a single-mode and a broad-band dye lasers have been used. The broad-band laser has a long-cavity configuration in order to have many modes resonant with the Doppler broadened absorbing line and, at the same time, a bandwidth easily adjustable in the (1 ÷ 3) GHz range. A new method to measure the drift velocity is proposed and drift velocities as high as 27 m/s have been measured in specially coated cells containing sodium vapour and 6 Torr of krypton.
