Abstract: We study the effect of power and phase distortions as induced by cross-phase modulation and electrostrictive nonlincarity in dispersive optical fibers. We obtain, evaluate, and discuss simple analytical expressions for the intensity and phase crosstalk in the presence of electrostriction between two wavelength channels copropagating in a standard, step core index profile fiber. The present model provides a simple estimate of the impact of electrostriction on the transmission performance of fiber optic communication systems.
