Role of polarization mode dispersion on modulational instability in optical fibers

Abstract: The evolution of the modulational instability (MI) gain spectrum in optical fibers in the presence of linear random birefringence was studied. In the model, both a random variation of the absolute value of the birefringence as well as a random coupling between the two fiber axes were included. It was found that even when the deterministic case is completely stable, birefringence randomness may lead to polarization MI.
