Abstract: The experimental characterization of a novel laser source of picosecond optical pulses, that is based on an active fiber loop, a bandpass filter and a frequency shifting element, is presented. By turning on the acoustoptic modulator, it was observed that the circulating light self-organized in high repetition rate trains of picosecond single pulses. By changing the loop length and the average group velocity dispersion in the loop from anomalous to normal, a movement from the dispersive to a dissipative regime of soliton formation in the laser was accomplished. The dissipative mechanism of soliton generation was analyzed and was well reproduced by numerical simulations.
